One of my clearest childhood memories is sitting in my grandmother’s dining room and making paper snowflakes. I’m not really sure who taught me how to make a snowflake out of paper, but I remember how much I enjoyed cutting shapes into the paper while the adults drank coffee.
If you don’t know how to make a snowflake out of paper, you’re at the right place. For Day 24 of the YES! Christmas Activity Challenge, we’re going to show you how to make one out of any paper you have at home. And of course, since designing printables is what we do around here, we’ve also prepared a printable template to make this project even easier.
How to Make a Paper Snowflake (without a template)
To make your paper snowflake, you’re going to need scissors and a piece of paper: Make sure you use the thinnest paper you can find, so you’ll be able to cut it when it’s folded. You can use any color you like. White would be the classic, but why not make a colorful snowflake decor? Anything goes.
We’ve prepared illustrated folding instructions to make this a bit easier, so make sure you look at the picture below as you go through the steps.
- Start with a square piece of paper (if it’s not square, trim the excess off).
- Fold the square in half diagonally.
- Fold the triangle you get in half.
- Now fold the triangle in thirds. Fold one side to the front and the other side to the back.
- Trim off the excess pieces from the bottom.
- Now cut some shapes into the sides of your triangle. If you want, you can draw the design first and then cut it out, or just freestyle it.
- Once you’re done, unfold the paper and you’ll get a beautiful unique snowflake.
Use Our Paper Snowflake Template
The other (even easier) option is to make your snowflake using our paper snowflake template. The folding steps are pretty much the same, so please follow the instructions above. We’ve illustrated the steps with the snowflake template in the picture below.
This template will give you a beautiful classic six-sided snowflake.
